Very rarely do skiers jump directly from a beginner’s class to the expert slopes. Snowboarders rarely master the half pipe after their first lesson. Lessons in skiing don’t stop after the basics.
That’s probably why Olympic ski teams have coaches.
If you are planning on enjoying a holiday at a ski chalet in La Rosiere , La Plagne or Courchevel for the first time, or you are a veteran of the French slopes, a ski lesson on your holiday may be the perfect thing to help you make the most of your time in France. From learning beginner skills to advanced tricks and technique, more knowledge never hurt anyone.
Ski instruction for everyone
Ski instructors across Europe are certified in teaching a number of basic and advanced techniques. No matter where you started skiing or snowboarding, you should find a benefit in a class. There are a number of ski schools that can provide lessons from kids aged three up to adults. Ski schools like the ESF (Ecole du Ski Francais) or New Generation offer lessons in both skiing and snowboarding and even a nursery service for those under three.
The lesson can provide a bit of an added refresher to remembering basic skiing skills like parallel turns, hockey stops, carving and even the snow plough.
There is a misconception that most ski schools only cater for beginners. They can offer a test to seasoned skiers to determine where to start, or what to focus on in the lesson. According to industry standards, athletes are placed into skill levels. Knowing your level will help you stay on top of your skills, year on year, just like professional athletes.
Most schools relish the opportunity to teach upper-level private lessons or advanced classes, and often those classes are cheaper than the introductory classes. After enjoying the slopes for a few days, learning new skills in a mid-week lesson may be a great way to increase the fun.
More than just skiing
With the popularity of snowboarding and other snow sports steadily growing across France, many schools offer more than just basic ski instruction. Some companies offer heli-skiing instruction and tours, snow adventure training in snowshoeing, snow kites, ice driving and even dog sledding.
When visiting France on your next ski holiday, before enjoying unlimited access to the slopes from your own private chalet, think about getting in a quick lesson at one of the area’s fine ski and snowboard schools. The benefits are tremendous.
