Courchevel is just one of the resorts located in the popular Three Valleys ski area which is the largest linked ski area in the world. Boasting over 600km of pistes and over 200 lifts, there is to terrain to suit everyone from beginner to expert. It’s also known as the ‘winter playground’ and with the incredible snowfall this season, the resort seems to be living up to that name.
Snowfall is evidently an important factor when it comes to a great skiing experience and in Courchevel, they are trying to prevent a rather large amount of snow from melting this summer on the Emile Allais Stade area above 1850 to keep it for next season’s Ladies World Cup taking place in December.
So, what snow farming technique will be used to store the snow?
There are many factors that influence how long snow sticks around – these include the altitude of the resort, orientation of the mountain and how sheltered the mountain is from the weather that has the ability to melt the snow too quickly.
Courchevel are bringing back a Snow Farming technique which stores an area of snow under a special tarpaulin. Once this is done blocks of insulation panels are placed on top. An estimated 20,000 cubic metres are being stored and 15,000 will remain by the end of November, just in time before the Ladies World Cup! More information regarding this event will be available nearer the time, so be sure to stay tuned for details.
